U.S. Embassy Warns Citizens of Planned IMN Protests in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja issued a security alert on March 13, 2026, regarding planned demonstrations by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. The diplomatic mission informed U.S. citizens that the group announced its intention to assemble and march in Abuja and other Nigerian cities on the same day.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has announced its intention to assemble and march in Abuja and other cities in Nigeria today,” the Embassy stated in its official communication.

Safety Recommendations

The Embassy subsequently advised American nationals to take precautionary measures. Officials recommended that citizens avoid areas where demonstrations might occur.

“The Embassy recommends that all U.S. citizens remain in their residences,” the alert specified.Furthermore, the mission urged Americans to monitor local media for updates and to avoid large gatherings. The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining situational awareness throughout the day.

Context of the Islamic Movement

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, led by Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, has organized numerous protests in recent years. The group demands the release of its detained leader and calls for systemic changes within the country. Previous demonstrations by the IMN have occasionally resulted in clashes with security forces.

The Nigerian government previously proscribed the organization as a terrorist group in 2019. However, the group continued its activities despite the ban.
