The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and protecting the digital rights and privacy of Nigerians as online activities continue to grow across the country.
According to Ayodele Bakare, Assistant Director in the Cybersecurity Department of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The government has already developed several policy and regulatory frameworks aimed at improving cybersecurity governance.
Protecting Nigerians in the Digital Space
Speaking in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. Bakare explained that the government focused on ensuring that citizens’ data, privacy, and digital rights adequately protected.
He noted that as digital services expand—from online banking to e-commerce and social media. There is a growing need to protect users from cyber threats such as fraud, identity theft, hacking, and data breaches.
Collaborative Cybersecurity Strategy
Also, Bakare emphasized that cybersecurity governance in Nigeria is implemented through collaboration. Among multiple government agencies, each with specific roles and responsibilities.
This coordinated approach allows different institutions to work together in monitoring cyber threats. Developing security policies, and enforcing regulations that protect individuals and businesses online.

However, Experts say stronger cybersecurity frameworks are essential for Nigeria’s growing digital economy, as trust in online systems is crucial for businesses, government services, and financial transactions.
The Federal Government believes that improving cybersecurity will boost confidence in digital platforms. Encourage innovation, and protect millions of Nigerians who rely on the internet for daily activities.
