Tinubu’s UK Trip Amid Borno Attack Shows Insensitivity — Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonwo

Kenneth Okonkwo, chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s trip to the United Kingdom, describing it as insensitive amid the recent bomb attacks in Borno state.

Okonkwo spoke on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today.

Okonkwo said Tinubu should have suspended his trip in light of the killings in the north-east.

He accused the president of showing disregard for victims and members of the armed forces.

“You have your president who is treading upon the blood of the martyrs in the northeast,” he said.

He also criticised the presence of key security officials outside the country during the crisis.

According to him, Tinubu travelled with the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, leaving a leadership gap at a critical time.

He added that the vice-president was also engaged elsewhere, which he said reflects poor prioritisation.

Okonkwo compared the situation with the United States, citing how former President Donald Trump personally received the bodies of fallen soldiers.

He said Nigerian leaders should show similar responsibility and empathy.

The ADC stalwart accused the government of failing to equip security forces adequately, alleging that troops lack the necessary tools and morale to confront insurgents.

“Even Boko Haram are using drones, and these people are barely fighting with their hands,” he said.

Okonkwo blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he described as growing insecurity.

He said the ruling party has failed to provide effective leadership and protect citizens.

He added that the ADC offers a people-centred alternative, accusing the APC of serving only powerful interests.

Okonkwo said leaders must take responsibility in times of crisis, urging the government to prioritise security and the welfare of Nigerians.
