The United Kingdom signed a new agreement with Nigeria to expedite the return of individuals residing illegally in Britain. As reported by ALO360, the deal removed administrative barriers that previously delayed removals and established stronger cooperation on border security.
Shabana Mahmood, Home Secretary, and Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigerian Minister of Interior, formalized the agreement on March 20, 2026. The signing took place during the state visit of Bola Tinubu, Nigerian President, to the United Kingdom. This marked the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in 37 years.
UK Documents Gain Recognition
Nigeria agreed to recognize UK letters as valid identification for returns purposes. These alternative documents are issued to individuals without valid passports. Previously, British authorities waited for emergency travel documents from Nigeria before proceeding with removals. Consequently, the new arrangement allows faster processing of returns.
The partnership specifically targets visa overstayers, foreign criminals, and failed asylum seekers. Furthermore, annual returns to Nigeria have nearly doubled to 1,150 cases. Returns and deportations of illegal migrants and foreign criminals from the UK have reached nearly 60,000 since the 2024 election.
Expanded Security Cooperation
The ministers signed additional agreements to combat organized immigration crime. A standardized document-checking system will verify application authenticity on both sides. This measure addresses recent cases involving fake job sponsorships, sham marriages, and forged financial records.
Moreover, Nigeria committed to reviewing its laws to ensure the toughest possible sentences for immigration offenders. The countries also agreed to launch joint operations and share intelligence to dismantle criminal gangs abusing visa routes.
Economic and Fraud Prevention Measures
The partnership includes a “fusion cell” model to tackle online scams. This initiative brings together public-sector bodies, banks, tech firms, and communications companies to share intelligence on criminal tactics rapidly. The collaboration targets romance fraud, investment scams, and cryptocurrency schemes targeting UK residents.
Additionally, the agreement expands business visa schemes to facilitate investment opportunities between the two nations. Florence Eshalomi, UK Trade Envoy, described the strengthened partnership as a bold step toward fostering economic growth for Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy.
Official Statements
The UK Home Office stated: “We have signed a new agreement with Nigeria to speed up the return of people with no legal right to be in the UK.”
Alex Norris, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, emphasized the importance of the deal. He stated that Nigeria serves as a key partner in tackling illegal migration as the UK’s largest African visa market. He added that the agreement represents another step in restoring order to the border.
Tunji-Ojo affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to being a responsible country. He noted that the relationship means a great deal to Nigeria and that the government aims to sustain it for generations. He emphasized that those who come to equity must come with clean hands.
