President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will improve electricity supply across the country.
Tinubu gave the assurance on Friday in a keynote speech at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja.
He acknowledged the persistent power challenges and said the government is taking steps to address them.
“Many of you are lamenting the problems of electricity and power. Yes, we are paying attention to that,” he said.
The president said the government plans to strengthen the power grid through new investments.
He said the grid asset management company will inject about 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor.
“We are going to improve on it. Electricity will become better. Be assured that there will be opportunity and progress in our industrialisation path,” he said.
Tinubu’s assurance comes amid widespread power outages across the country.
Many homes and businesses have remained in darkness due to a shortage of gas supply to generation companies (GenCos).
Earlier, Adebayo Adelabu, minister of power, apologised to Nigerians over the prolonged outages.
He spoke on Tuesday during a press briefing in Abuja.
Adelabu said the situation has worsened living conditions, especially during the dry season.
“I want to apologise to Nigerians for this temporary issue that is causing hardship, especially during this dry season,” he said.
He added that the outages have affected businesses, schools, and industries.
“Businesses are being affected, schools have been affected, and industries have been affected. It is not our wish to be in this situation,” he said.
The minister, however, said the challenges stem from factors beyond the government’s control.
