Apple sues OpenAI, accusing the AI company of using stolen trade secrets to build new AI devices. Here’s what the lawsuit means for the future of AI hardware.
Apple has dragged OpenAI to court over claims that the AI company used its secret information to build new AI hardware. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in California. Apple accused OpenAI, startup io Products, and two former Apple employees of stealing confidential company data. According to Apple, the workers emailed themselves sensitive files before leaving the company. Apple believes the information gave OpenAI an unfair advantage in developing future AI gadgets. However, OpenAI has denied the allegations.
“We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets,” spokesperson Drew Pusateri said.
He added that the company is “focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere.”
The Claims Made Against OpenAI
The lawsuit names Chang Liu and Tang Tan, two former Apple engineers now working with OpenAI. Apple claimed Liu downloaded confidential files about unreleased products and failed to return a company laptop after leaving. The company also accused Tan of using Apple’s private information while hiring new staff. Apple alleged that interview candidates were encouraged to bring Apple hardware parts for “show and tell.” In addition, Apple claimed Tan shared confidential supplier information before joining OpenAI. The company said it also found similar actions involving other former employees.
The Legal Battle Could Affect OpenAI
Meanwhile, the legal battle could affect OpenAI’s growing hardware ambitions. The AI company bought io Products, the startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, to build AI-powered consumer devices. Although Ive is not accused of wrongdoing, the acquisition is now under fresh attention. Apple also claimed it contacted OpenAI about its concerns earlier this year but received no response. As a result, the company is asking the court to stop OpenAI from using any alleged confidential information. Apple is also seeking financial compensation, although it did not reveal the amount.
The lawsuit marks a major shift in the relationship between the two tech giants. Apple and OpenAI previously worked together to bring ChatGPT features to Apple devices. Today, they are facing each other in court as competition in the AI industry grows stronger. OpenAI is preparing to launch its first AI hardware product and is also planning a public stock market listing. At the same time, Apple is working on smarter AI features and a redesigned Siri. This case could shape the future of AI hardware and determine how companies protect valuable technology secrets.
