Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken a bold step to tackle electricity shortages by approving plans to generate power from coal.
The state government has granted licenses to Chinese firms to begin exploration of coal deposits. With the aim of establishing power generation projects that can improve electricity supply for residents and businesses.
Chinese Firms to Drive Industrial Expansion
According to the Commissioner for Mining, Andrew Ijegbai, the partnership goes beyond power generation.
The Chinese companies are also expected to invest in cement production and ceramic tile manufacturing. Using the state’s rich clay resources—signaling a broader push toward industrialization and job creation.
Okpebholo Bigger Plan to Unlock Edo’s Mineral Wealth
According to Okpebholo, The initiative is part of a wider directive by the governor to aggressively explore and develop Edo State’s solid mineral resources.
While the move could boost energy supply and economic growth. It may also raise environmental concerns, as coal remains a fossil fuel with significant carbon emissions.
