‘Obi is a good man, but becoming president now is difficult’ — Fayose

Ayo Fayose

Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti state, says Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), may struggle to become president under the current political realities.

Fayose spoke while addressing journalists at the national convention of the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He described Obi as a “fantastic” individual but said the political landscape makes his presidential ambition difficult at this time.

“Obi is a good man. He’s a fantastic guy. But to become president at this time is difficult,” he said.

Furthermore, Fayose expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the current government is not performing badly when compared with the past.

“You don’t have to have 100 percent before you say someone is doing well. When you relate our past with our present, it’s not doing badly,” he said.

He questioned the strength of the opposition and the viability of alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 election.

“Tell me the alternative — ADC. Let’s wait till that time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fayose raised doubts about the possibility of a united opposition front.

He said internal dynamics within opposition parties could weaken their chances.

He suggested that if Obi does not secure a ticket in a coalition platform like the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party’s political path may become uncertain.

“If Obi is not on the ballot of ADC, that may be the end of it. You won’t see him going back to the Labour Party,” he said.

Fayose also questioned whether Obi would accept a vice-presidential slot under another candidate, noting that political interests often shape such decisions.

“That’s the reality. There is weight everywhere,” he said.
