Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, has welcomed Rabiu Kwankwaso into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a step towards rebuilding Nigeria.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Obi said Kwankwaso’s entrance into the party marks “another significant step in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild our democracy and dear nation.”

He said he visited Kano on Monday at Kwankwaso’s invitation.

The former Kano state governor formally joined the ADC during a rally in his Kano residence.

Obi said the development reinforces the need for opposition forces to work together ahead of the 2027 general election.

“As I have consistently maintained, this is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose,” he said.

He described Nigeria’s current situation as critical, citing economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust in governance.

Obi said the challenges require more than rhetoric and demand collaboration, disciplined leadership, and commitment to national progress.

He urged political actors to move beyond divisive politics based on ethnicity, religion, and region.

“We must embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria,” he said.

The ADC presidential hopeful noted that the task ahead goes beyond winning elections and focuses on rebuilding institutions and restoring public confidence.

“The task before us is not just about winning elections, but about securing a better future for our children,” he said.

He called on opposition members and Nigerians to prioritise unity and national interest over personal ambition.

“This is a defining moment that calls for unity over division, service over self, and nation over personal interest,” he said.

Obi reiterated his belief that a better Nigeria is possible through collective effort and sacrifice.
