The Federal Government has partnered with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). To launch a Small Hydropower Centre of Excellence aimed at boosting electricity access across Nigeria.
However, The initiative is part of broader efforts to tackle the country’s persistent power deficit while promoting clean and sustainable energy solutions, especially in underserved rural communities.
Centre to Be Based at University of Abuja
Also, The hydropower centre will be located at the University of Abuja and expected to serve as a regional hub for West Africa.
Funded by the China International Development Cooperation Agency. The facility will focus on technical training, research, policy support, and knowledge sharing in small hydropower (SHP) development.
It aims to equip engineers, policymakers, and energy experts with the skills needed to design and implement sustainable hydropower projects.
Targeting Rural Electrification and Energy Access
Also, Small hydropower systems seen as a viable solution for off-grid and rural communities where access to electricity remains limited.
By harnessing local water resources, the project expected to provide reliable, affordable. And environmentally friendly power to remote areas—reducing dependence on fossil fuels and diesel generators.

The collaboration reflects Nigeria’s growing focus on renewable energy as a key driver of economic development and energy security.
