FG Sets Tough New Rules for fairly used Vehicles Imports in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced new regulations for the importation of fairly used vehicles, popularly known as “Tokunbo,” in a move to improve quality and safety standards across the country.

The new guidelines are designed to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles enter Nigeria, addressing long-standing concerns over the influx of substandard cars into the market.

Strict Safety and Environmental Checks

Under the new policy, all imported vehicles must pass strict inspection processes before being cleared into the country. These include compliance with safety benchmarks such as braking systems, airbags, and structural integrity, as well as environmental standards like emission levels.

Regulators say the move aligns with global best practices and is intended to reduce accidents linked to faulty vehicles while also limiting environmental pollution.

Crackdown on Substandard Imports

The directive is expected to curb the importation of damaged, accidented, or poorly refurbished vehicles often sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Industry stakeholders have long raised concerns about the risks posed by such vehicles, including frequent breakdowns and higher maintenance costs. With the new standards, importers will be held more accountable, and only certified vehicles will be allowed into the Nigerian market.

Better Protection for Consumers

Experts believe the policy will ultimately benefit consumers by improving the quality of cars available and increasing trust in the market.

While prices of fairly used vehicles may rise slightly due to stricter compliance requirements, buyers are expected to gain access to safer and more reliable options.

The government says the move is part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s automotive sector, promote safety on the roads, and create a more transparent and regulated vehicle import system.
