Fola Oyekunle of PDP Wins Ibadan North Federal Constituency By-Election with Wide Margin
In a decisive electoral victory, Fola Oyekunle, the candidate representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emerged as the winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, held on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The announcement was made in the early hours of Sunday by Prof. Abiodun Oluwadare, the designated Returning Officer for the election, under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Fola Oyekunle PDP victory
According to official results released by Prof. Oluwadare in Ibadan, Oyekunle clinched the seat by securing a commanding 18,404 votes, defeating his closest rival Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered a total of 8,312 votes. This landslide win reflects the PDP’s growing political momentum in Oyo State and across Nigeria’s southwestern region.

Other candidates in the race included:
- Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who secured 88 votes
- Olabisi Olajumoke representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), with 40 votes
- Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), who finished with 18 votes
Following the completion of vote counting and validation of the results, the Returning Officer officially declared:
“Fola Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party, having satisfied all the requirements of the law and secured the highest number of valid votes cast, is hereby returned elected as the Member of the House of Representatives for Ibadan North Federal Constituency.”
Why the By-Election Was Held
The need for the by-election arose after the sudden demise of Hon. Olaide Akinremi, the APC lawmaker who previously represented the constituency. His passing on July 10, 2025, left the seat vacant, prompting the electoral commission to schedule a new poll to fill the vacancy.
Political Significance of the Victory
Oyekunle’s victory is being viewed as a major political milestone for the PDP in Oyo State, especially as it reclaims a seat that was formerly held by the APC. Political analysts say this could have broader implications for future elections, especially with 2027 in sight. The turnout and result are seen as a reflection of shifting voter sentiments, party organization, and campaign effectiveness in the region.
