A Chinese automaker has patented a voice-controlled toilet designed to fit inside a passenger vehicle.
Seres, a carmaker based in Chongqing, has received a patent for what it describes as an “in-vehicle toilet” that slides out from beneath a passenger seat.
According to the patent filing dated April 10, the feature is intended to help drivers and passengers during long road trips, camping stays or situations where users remain inside the car for extended periods.
The design shows a compact toilet system that can be activated by a push button or voice command. When deployed, it slides from under the seat for use. The system also includes a fan and exhaust pipe to direct odours outside the vehicle.
Waste would be stored in a removable tank that must be emptied manually. The patent also describes a heating element that helps evaporate urine and dry solid waste. When not in use, the toilet remains hidden under the seat to save cabin space.
Seres has not confirmed plans to launch any vehicle with the feature, so it remains unclear whether the concept will reach production.
China’s electric vehicle market has become one of the most competitive in the world, pushing manufacturers to add unusual features such as massage seats, karaoke systems and built-in refrigerators to attract buyers.
Seres and its sub-brand Aito mainly produce electric SUVs and have expanded sales beyond China into Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Whether practical or gimmicky, the patent highlights how far automakers are going to stand out in the crowded EV market.
