Alex Otti, governor of Abia state, says the state government has partnered with the federal government to construct 1,200 housing units in Umuahia.
In a post on X on Wednesday, the governor said he performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project under the Federal Housing Authority’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
Otti said the initiative is a collaboration between the state government and the administration of Bola Tinubu.
He added that Abia is the first state in the south-east, and among the first five states nationwide, to key into the programme.
“This landmark project makes Abia the first state in the South East to partner with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration on this initiative,” he said.
The governor commended Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, managing director of the Federal Housing Authority, for driving the project.
Otti said the development is aimed at expanding access to affordable housing and improving residents’ welfare.
He added that the state ensured compensation for affected landowners before commencing construction.
According to him, over 800 out of about 900 verified claimants have been fully paid, while others are expected to resolve documentation issues to receive their payments.
Otti said his administration will continue to prioritise projects that directly impact the lives of Abia residents.
“Our focus remains on people-oriented projects that uplift lives,” he said.
