UK military launches emergency mission to support a Briton linked to the MV Hondius virus outbreak.
The British Army has parachuted medical personnel and emergency supplies onto the remote island of Tristan da Cunha to help a British man with suspected hantavirus linked to the MV Hondius outbreak.
The man, who lives on the isolated British overseas territory, left the cruise ship in mid-April before developing symptoms weeks later. Health officials said he remains in stable condition while isolating on the island.
A team of six paratroopers, alongside an intensive care doctor and nurse from the 16 Air Assault Brigade, carried out the emergency mission after flying from RAF Brize Norton. The operation also delivered 3.3 tonnes of medical supplies and emergency oxygen to the island, where healthcare resources were reportedly running low.
The Ministry of Defence said this was the first time the UK military had parachuted medical staff into a humanitarian crisis zone. Tristan da Cunha, home to just 221 people, has no airport and is only accessible by sea.
The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has now recorded six confirmed hantavirus cases and three deaths. Two Britons with confirmed infections are receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa.
Meanwhile, more than 100 passengers are being evacuated from the ship in Tenerife as global health authorities continue monitoring the situation.
UK officials say the risk to the general public remains very low, but passengers from the cruise ship are being closely monitored and quarantined as a precaution.
