Heineken names Rafael Oliveira as its new CEO. The former JDE Peet’s boss will lead the brewer as it tackles weaker beer sales and job cuts
Heineken has chosen Rafael Oliveira as its new chief executive officer, marking a major leadership change for the Dutch brewing giant. The company announced on Tuesday that Oliveira will succeed Dolf van den Brink.
Dolf is set to leave the role in January after six years in charge. However, Oliveira’s appointment still requires shareholder approval. Before this move, he led coffee company JDE Peet’s. And he also built a strong reputation in the consumer goods sector.
The leadership switch comes at a challenging time for Heineken. Van den Brink surprised many observers by stepping down. This was followed by what was described as a mixed period for the company.
Despite holding a strong global position in the beer market, Heineken has faced pressure from slowing sales. Even so, the company’s board believes Oliveira is the right person for the next phase of growth.
Speaking on the appointment, supervisory board chairman Peter Wennink expressed confidence in the incoming CEO. He said, “With Rafa at the helm, we look forward to building on Heineken’s strong foundations and continuing our journey of long-term, balanced growth.”
Heineken recently revealed that beer sales dropped by nearly one percent in the first quarter. The brewer blamed the decline on an “increasingly complex” economic climate and higher energy prices. Earlier in the year, the company also announced plans to cut up to 6,000 jobs as part of efforts to improve efficiency.
Oliveira is already looking ahead to the task before him. In his first comments after the announcement, he said, “I am confident we will accelerate growth, drive productivity and future-fit Heineken, winning the hearts of consumers worldwide.”
His appointment signals a fresh chapter for the company as it works to strengthen performance, adapt to changing market conditions, and reconnect with consumers across the globe.
