Navy Commodore Visits Oba of Lagos Ahead of 70th Anniversary

The Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, on Wednesday visited the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, ahead of the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration.

The courtesy visit took place at the monarch’s palace in Isale Eko, Lagos, as preparations continue for the milestone event.

Visit Signals Start of Anniversary Activities

During the meeting, Adams-Aliu explained that the visit formed part of activities lined up for the Navy’s anniversary celebration scheduled for May 29 to June 4, 2026.

In addition, he formally invited the Oba of Lagos to participate in the week-long event.

According to the naval commander, the anniversary marks 70 years of maritime operations, national defence, and regional security contributions by the Nigerian Navy.

He also noted that the Navy remains committed to strengthening its relationship with traditional institutions, especially in coastal communities where maritime activities support economic growth.

Navy Stresses Need for Strong Community Support

Furthermore, Adams-Aliu highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Navy and community leaders.

He said strong partnerships play a major role in tackling security challenges within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

He added that cooperation with traditional rulers also helps to build public trust in naval operations across coastal communities.

As a result, the Navy continues to work closely with local leaders to promote safety and stability within the maritime sector.

Celebration to Feature Major Naval Events

Meanwhile, the Navy has planned several activities to mark the anniversary celebration.

The programme will feature ceremonial parades, community outreach initiatives, and an International Fleet Review at the Eko Atlantic waterfront.

According to Adams-Aliu, the celebration will also showcase the Navy’s operational achievements and long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s security architecture.

He further stated that the event is expected to attract senior military officers, foreign naval delegations, government officials, and maritime stakeholders from different parts of the country.

Oba of Lagos Praises Nigerian Navy

In his response, the Oba of Lagos commended the Nigerian Navy for protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and maintaining security along the coastline.

The monarch also expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace, unity, and security within the maritime sector.
