UN warns of a powerful El Niño

Scientists say a strengthening El Niño could push global temperatures higher and fuel extreme weather across the planet.

The United Nations has warned that a new El Niño weather pattern is developing and could become one of the strongest recorded in decades. The World Meteorological Organization said the phenomenon is expected to intensify through the rest of 2026, increasing the likelihood of heatwaves, droughts, floods and other extreme weather events worldwide.

Rising sea surface temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean have confirmed the emergence of El Niño conditions. Climate experts say the warming event is occurring alongside long-term human-driven climate change, creating the potential for even more severe global impacts.

Several national meteorological agencies have forecast that the current El Niño could reach “super El Niño” strength. Scientists also warn that its effects may contribute to 2027 becoming the warmest year ever recorded.

The UN is urging governments and communities to prepare for increased weather-related risks as the climate system enters a potentially volatile period.
