Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer and activist, has accused Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar of prioritising their personal political ambitions over the interests of other candidates and supporters.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni Media, Adeyanju said both politicians have consistently focused on their individual ambitions rather than broader national interests.
“Because of personal interest and greed, all these guys care about is themselves,” he said.
“Look at Atiku, for example. Atiku has been running since only God knows when.”
“Look at Peter. All he cares about is himself.”
Adeyanju recalled Obi’s relationship with Nyesom Wike during the 2023 election, where he told Wike that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can retain the governorship position in the state while supporting him for the presidency.
“Look at that last election in Rivers,” he said.
“You recall that he went to Rivers when he was romancing Wike and publicly said that all he cared about was that they should leave the national election for him.”
“He was willing to sacrifice his foot soldiers in Rivers and allow the PDP to take the state.”
“What kind of politician would do that?”
INDIVIDUAL AMBITION IS NOT LEADERSHIP
The activist lawyer said political leadership should not revolve around the ambitions of a single individual.
“It can never always be about you,” he said.
“Same thing with Atiku. It is always about them, not about the nation.”
Adeyanju also questioned the motives behind the repeated attempts by some politicians to seek elective office.
“All this desperation to get to power is not for service,” he said.
“It is not for service.”
He alleged that some politicians seek power primarily for personal enrichment.
“When they get there, they stockpile money in their banks and create vehicles for contracts,” he said.
Adeyanju further criticised the manner in which some political parties select candidates.
“If somebody sits in his living room and declares a governorship candidate in his house, that’s the person coming to change Nigeria?” he asked.
