Army rescues 23 abducted passengers after Kogi highway attack

Troops launched a counter-kidnapping operation after suspected bandits ambushed travellers along a major road in Kogi State.

The Nigerian Army has rescued 23 abducted passengers following a suspected bandit attack on the Ayegunle–Bunu Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to the Army, troops responded to a distress call around 3:30 a.m. on Monday after gunmen reportedly blocked the highway and kidnapped several travellers. Although the attackers had fled before security operatives arrived, soldiers immediately launched a pursuit operation along the suspects’ escape routes.

During a search of the area, troops recovered two Toyota commercial buses and a HOWO truck abandoned by the roadside. The Army confirmed that two victims were killed in the attack, while five others sustained injuries. Injured victims were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Kabba for treatment.

The military said sustained pressure from pursuing troops forced the kidnappers to abandon 23 captives, who were rescued unharmed.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges on major highways in Kogi State, despite intensified efforts by security agencies.

Troops have continued search-and-rescue operations in the area to locate any remaining victims and track down the fleeing suspects.
