Ukrainian drones hit St. Petersburg oil terminal as economic forum opens

Ukraine launched overnight drone attacks on St. Petersburg, targeting key infrastructure as Russia’s flagship economic forum began.

Ukrainian drones hit several targets in St. Petersburg overnight, including the Petersburg Oil Terminal, one of Russia’s largest oil export facilities, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy said the long-range strikes targeted important infrastructure nearly 700 miles from Ukrainian territory. Videos from the city showed thick black smoke rising above St. Petersburg as delegates arrived for the opening of the International Economic Forum.

St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed that infrastructure facilities in multiple districts were attacked. He said several sites were damaged and a number of people were injured, although no deaths were reported. Emergency services remain on high alert.

The annual economic forum, often described as Russia’s version of Davos, brings together political and business leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to deliver a keynote address later this week.

The latest drone attacks highlight Ukraine’s growing ability to strike deep inside Russia as the conflict continues.
