Victim Trapped During Phone Retrieval Attempt
A 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, has died after becoming trapped inside a well while trying to recover a mobile phone in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning and was later reported to the Kano State Fire Service.
Fire Service Responds to Emergency Call
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, officials received the distress call at about 11:13 a.m.
Furthermore, a staff member, Kabiru Tata, alerted the agency about the situation.
Consequently, firefighters quickly mobilised from the headquarters and headed to the scene.
Rescue Team Finds Victim Unconscious
Upon arrival, the emergency team discovered that the victim was trapped inside a well that had been converted into a waste disposal pit.
According to preliminary findings, Usman entered the well to retrieve a mobile phone that had fallen inside.
However, he could not climb back out.
Although rescuers successfully pulled him from the well, they found him unconscious.
Oxygen Shortage Suspected
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that the victim died shortly after the rescue operation.
The Fire Service stated that oxygen depletion and excessive heat inside the confined space likely caused his death.
Afterward, authorities handed over the body to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar.
Fire Service Issues Safety Warning
Following the incident, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to take safety measures around wells.
He advised community members to properly cover active wells and fill abandoned ones.
According to him, such precautions can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Authorities Urge Community Vigilance
In addition, the Fire Service called on parents, community leaders and residents to remain vigilant.
Officials stressed that securing wells and other hazardous structures remains essential for public safety.
Therefore, residents were encouraged to report dangerous locations before accidents occur.
