Donald Trump sparked immediate controversy on Friday after suggesting LeBron James might be “a racist” during a White House press conference, responding to a question about whether James or Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player of all time.
Trump’s answer left little room for ambiguity.
“Michael Jordan is a guy that’s a friend of mine. I play golf with him. He’s a really good guy,” Trump said.
“I think LeBron is, maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”
The comment came hours after James, 41, announced he was signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. James has won four titles, been named MVP four times, and holds the records for most points and most games played in league history. He is joining a 76ers squad that already includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team,” James wrote on social media.
James has not responded to Trump’s comments. The two have a long documented history of public friction. James called Trump “a bum” in 2017 and has endorsed Democratic candidates in three presidential elections, including Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris.
Jordan, 63, won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. That alongside five MVP awards and remains Trump’s preferred answer to the GOAT debate.
