Ekiti Decides: One injured as APC, ADC supporters clash over vote-buying allegations

Ekiti election

One person sustained injuries on Saturday after supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) clashed over alleged vote buying in Ilawe Ekiti.

The incident occurred at Polling Unit 4, Ward 2, during the ongoing Ekiti governorship election.

ADC candidate alleges vote-buying attempt

Dare Bejide, ADC governorship candidate, alleged that politicians brought money to the polling area for distribution to voters.

According to him, some ADC supporters intercepted the cash before it could be shared.

Furthermore, Bejide alleged that an APC chieftain arrived near the polling unit in a Toyota Jeep with a large sum of money.

He claimed the development triggered a heated argument that later escalated into a fight.

“One of them brought money here. They brought it in a sack, but we intercepted her,” he said.

One supporter injured in fracas

Meanwhile, the confrontation turned violent.

During the fracas, one ADC supporter reportedly sustained a head injury.

Witnesses said the victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

“You can see one of my aides was beaten by the security men they brought,” Bejide alleged.

“The boy had been rushed to the hospital now.”

Bejide accuses APC officials

The ADC candidate further claimed that a council chairman was invited to the scene after the money was intercepted.

According to him, the attempt to recover the money caused tension among party supporters.

“In a bid to retrieve the money, she called the council chairman, and that caused a lot of commotion here,” he said.

Bejide also alleged that APC supporters accused ADC members of distributing money but failed to provide evidence.

“They kept saying some ADC members were also distributing money, but they couldn’t mention anybody,” he said.

ADC candidate commends INEC

Despite the incident, Bejide praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the election.

He said electoral officials had performed their duties professionally.

“The electoral personnel have been very diligent, and everything is going on very well,” he said.

According to him, the situation calmed after journalists arrived at the polling unit.

“You realise that when you came here a few minutes ago, there was pandemonium here, but the moment they saw you with your camera, they ran away,” he said.
