Netherlands thrash Sweden 5-1 to move closer to qualification

Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored twice as the Netherlands delivered a dominant World Cup performance against Sweden.

The Netherlands beat Sweden 5-1 to move to the top of Group F and take a major step toward qualification for the World Cup round of 32.

Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute after finishing a swift Dutch counterattack. The striker added a second goal 12 minutes later from a Denzel Dumfries cross.

Sweden thought they had pulled one back before half-time, but Gustaf Lagerbielke’s goal was ruled out for offside.

The Dutch extended their lead early in the second half when Cody Gakpo scored twice within nine minutes. Both goals came from quick attacking moves, with substitute Crysencio Summerville providing the assist for Gakpo’s second.

Sweden finally got on the scoresheet through substitute Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, but Summerville completed the rout with a late strike to make it 5-1.

The match also marked a milestone at the tournament, with Gakpo’s second goal becoming the 100th goal scored at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Netherlands now lead Group F with four points, while Sweden will likely need a positive result against Tunisia in their final group match to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

The Netherlands are now firmly on course for the World Cup round of 32 after an emphatic win over Sweden.
