Deniz Undav scored twice off the bench as Germany staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Ivory Coast and reach the World Cup knockout stages.
Germany booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto.
Ivory Coast took the lead in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessie after a lively start from the African side. Germany pushed for an equaliser but had two goals ruled out before manager Julian Nagelsmann turned to his substitutes.
The changes proved decisive. Undav levelled in the 68th minute from Nadiem Amiri’s cross before striking again in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The Stuttgart forward controlled Felix Nmecha’s pass and calmly finished past goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to seal the win.
Germany had dominated possession and created several chances, but Ivory Coast looked dangerous on the counterattack through Yan Diomande, Amad Diallo and Kessie. Missed opportunities to extend their lead ultimately proved costly for Emerse Fae’s side.
The result sends Germany into the knockout stages after collecting six points from two matches. Undav’s brace also took his international tally to nine goals in just 11 appearances.
Ivory Coast remain in contention for qualification and can still progress from Group E with a victory over World Cup debutants Curaçao in their final group match.
Germany are through to the World Cup knockout rounds, while Ivory Coast must now beat Curaçao to keep their qualification hopes alive.
