Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister

Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, setting the stage for a new UK prime minister.

Keir Starmer has stepped down as leader of the Labour Party and announced plans to resign as UK prime minister once a successor is chosen.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he had informed King Charles of his decision and would remain in office until Labour elects a new leader. He said the party had made clear that it wanted new leadership ahead of the next general election.

Starmer, who became prime minister after Labour’s landslide victory in the 2024 general election, has faced growing pressure from within his party following poor local election results and criticism over the pace of change under his government.

Labour is expected to open nominations for a new leader on July 9, with a replacement likely to be in place before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September. Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is among the names being discussed as a possible successor.

Starmer’s departure will make way for Britain’s seventh prime minister in just 10 years, marking another major shift in UK politics.
