Late goals from Soufiane Rahimi and Gessime Yassine helped Morocco beat Haiti 4-2 and secure a place in the World Cup knockout stage.
Morocco came from behind twice to defeat Haiti 4-2 in their final Group C match in Atlanta, ending the Caribbean nation’s hopes of earning a historic first World Cup point.
Haiti shocked Morocco by taking the lead on two occasions through an own goal by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and a stunning long-range strike from Wilson Isidor. However, Morocco responded through Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari before late goals from substitutes Soufiane Rahimi and Gessime Yassine sealed the victory.
The result was enough to send Morocco into the Round of 32, although Brazil’s win over Scotland meant the North Africans finished second in Group C rather than top of the standings.
Haiti, ranked 83rd in the world, exited the tournament without a point but earned praise for a spirited performance that saw them score twice and push one of Africa’s strongest teams until the closing stages.
Morocco will now face either the Netherlands, Japan or Sweden in the World Cup Round of 32.
