Ikenna Enekweizu, national secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says the federal high court did not order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the party.
Enekweizu spoke during an interview on Arise Television on Friday.
His comments come after a federal high court in Lokoja set aside its earlier judgment compelling INEC to register the NDC as a political party.
‘No deregistration order’
Enekweizu said the court only ordered a fresh hearing of the substantive suit.
He insisted that no part of the ruling directed INEC to remove the NDC from the register of political parties.
“There was no order made by the court deregistering NDC,” he said.
“What the court said is that we should go back to full trial.”
Says NDC remains a registered party
Furthermore, the NDC secretary said the party remains legally registered despite disagreeing with the court’s decision.
He added that the party would continue carrying out its political activities until a contrary order is made.
“While we disagree with the entirety of the judgment, we maintain that there is no order made by the court today directing that NDC be deregistered,” he said.
“Until that order is made, NDC remains registered and will continue to carry out its functions.”
