Cape Verde secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia saw them finish second in Group H.
The Blue Sharks ended the group stage with three points, one ahead of two-time world champions Uruguay and 2034 World Cup hosts Saudi Arabia. The result marks Cape Verde’s first-ever qualification for the World Cup round of 32.
Cape Verde looked the more dangerous side throughout the match. Willy Semedo forced a fine save from Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais before firing another effort wide. Kevin Pina also came close early in the second half with a long-range strike that narrowly missed the target.
Saudi Arabia suffered a setback in the first half when defender Hassan Al Tambakti was stretchered off after collapsing without contact.
With 15 minutes remaining, Al Owais produced another crucial save to deny Laros Duarte after the Cape Verde midfielder broke through on goal.
The draw was enough to send Cape Verde through, setting up a blockbuster last-32 clash with defending champions Argentina at Miami Stadium on 3 July.
Cape Verde also became only the third African nation to remain unbeaten in the World Cup group stage on their tournament debut, underlining a memorable campaign that continues into the knockout rounds.
