Mexico beat Ecuador to reach World Cup last 16 after storm delay

Mexico advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Ecuador in a weather-delayed match at the Azteca Stadium.

A thunderstorm forced kick-off in Mexico City to be delayed by an hour, but once play began, the hosts wasted no time taking control. Backed by a passionate home crowd, Mexico created several early chances before Julian Quinones opened the scoring with a powerful finish after cutting in from the left.

The hosts doubled their advantage soon after when Raul Jimenez capitalised on a costly mistake by Ecuador defender Joel Ordonez. Quinones provided the assist as the Wolves striker curled his effort into the top corner to put Mexico firmly in command.

Ecuador improved after the break but struggled to create clear chances. Gonzalo Plata came closest to scoring, flicking an effort narrowly wide as Mexico comfortably protected their lead.

The match ended on a disappointing note for Ecuador when defender Piero Hincapie received a red card in stoppage time after covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent, becoming only the second player sent off at the tournament for that offence.

Mexico will now remain in Mexico City for their last-16 clash against either England or DR Congo as Javier Aguirre’s side continues its World Cup campaign.
