Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages as England fought back to beat DR Congo 2-1 and secure a place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
England looked set for one of the biggest upsets in their World Cup history after Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo an early lead. The African side defended bravely, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi producing several outstanding saves to frustrate England.
With 15 minutes remaining, Kane headed home the equaliser from Anthony Gordon’s cross. Four minutes from full-time, the England captain completed the turnaround with a powerful right-footed finish after turning sharply on the edge of the penalty area.
DR Congo had chances to extend their lead, including an effort from Yoane Wissa that struck the post before half-time. England, however, survived and eventually found the breakthrough they desperately needed.
England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the World Cup last 16 at the Azteca Stadium on Monday, 6 July.
