Senegal collapse late on as Belgium scale through

Belgium produced one of the biggest comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time and book a place in the last 16.

Senegal looked set for victory after Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr scored to give their side a deserved 2-0 lead. But Belgium mounted a late fightback.

Half-time substitute Romelu Lukaku pulled one back with four minutes remaining before captain Youri Tielemans headed in an equaliser in the 89th minute after goalkeeper Mory Diaw failed to deal with a cross from Leandro Trossard.

The match went to extra time, where Belgium were awarded a penalty after a lengthy VAR review ruled that Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans in the box. Tielemans calmly converted the spot-kick in the 125th minute to complete the turnaround.

Belgium’s victory sends them into the World Cup last 16, where they will face the United States.
