Chinese authorities have concluded that the pilot who flew a small aircraft into the Beijing CITIC Tower last week intentionally caused the crash due to personal reasons.
Officials identified the pilot only by his surname, Liu, a 66-year-old Beijing resident. According to investigators, he suffered from chronic insomnia and anxiety, and his personal diary contained repeated references to ending his life. The crash killed Liu and injured 13 other people, with one victim already discharged from hospital.
Authorities said Liu took off from an airport in Beijing’s Pinggu district for a solo flight before leaving the designated flight area, losing contact with the airport and crashing into the 109-storey skyscraper.
The CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, is Beijing’s tallest building and is located near China’s central government headquarters. The incident prompted authorities to suspend some light aircraft operations while investigations were underway, and online posts about the crash were widely removed from Chinese social media.
Officials say the investigation has classified the incident as a case of endangering public safety caused by personal reasons.
