Ronaldo and Ramos Sends Portugal into the Last 16

Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 in a thrilling World Cup round-of-32 clash after Gonçalo Ramos scored a 94th-minute winner.

Croatia had taken the lead early in the second half through Ivan Perišić. Portugal responded when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty, marking his first-ever goal in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. With extra time looming, Ramos headed home a cross from Rafael Leão to seal Portugal’s place in the last 16.

Croatia thought they had forced extra time when Joško Gvardiol scored deep into stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Both teams created several chances in an intense second half, with Croatia having two more goals disallowed for offside.

Portugal will now face European champions Spain national football team in the FIFA World Cup last 16 on 6 July.
