Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to secure their first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1938 and book a place in the last 16.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a brilliant run and assist from Johan Manzambi. Just 46 seconds into the second half, Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s lead with a composed finish to seal a comfortable win.
Algeria struggled to break down the Swiss defence, with their best chance coming before half-time when Farès Chaïbi tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka marked his 150th international appearance with another commanding display, while 20-year-old Manzambi continued his impressive tournament with his second assist.
The victory sends Switzerland into the World Cup last 16 for the fourth consecutive tournament. They will face the winner of Colombia and Ghana in Vancouver on 7 July.
Switzerland’s dominant display keeps their World Cup campaign alive and highlights the emergence of young star Johan Manzambi.
