The Oyo State Government has revised the 2025/2026 academic calendar for public primary and secondary schools, directing schools to resume on Monday, July 6, 2026, following the suspension of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) strike.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced the adjustment in a circular dated July 2 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye.
Schools to Resume on July 6
According to the revised calendar, public schools will reopen on July 6 to continue the current academic session.
The ministry said the term will last for six weeks and end on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Four-Week Holiday to Follow
The government also approved a four-week holiday after the completion of the term.
According to the new timetable:
- July 6, 2026: Schools resume.
- August 14, 2026: End of the academic term.
- August 17 – September 11, 2026: Four-week holiday.
- September 14, 2026: First term of the 2026/2027 academic session begins.
Strike Prompted Calendar Adjustment
The revised calendar follows the suspension of the month-long strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
The union had shut down public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State over the abduction of teachers and pupils from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
The strike was suspended after discussions between the union and the Oyo State Government.
NUT President, Titus Amba, said the union agreed to return to classrooms because of the need to protect the education of pupils affected by the disruption.
Government Seeks Smooth Academic Session
The revised calendar applies to all public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State.
The adjustment is expected to help schools recover part of the academic time lost during the industrial action while ensuring the timely commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session.
