Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi says he may not be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election. He alleged that the Federal Government has continued to frustrate his activities and target opposition figures across the country.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude. Media personality Chude Jideonwo shared excerpts of the interview on Wednesday through his X account.
Obi Raises Concerns Over His Safety
Responding to a question about his chances of contesting the 2027 election, Obi said he could not guarantee that he would even be alive before then.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you.
“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”
However, Obi said he was not making a direct accusation against the government. Instead, he claimed he experiences persistent obstruction in his daily activities.
“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. Because you do things that you think would be normal—it is not normal anymore.
“They won’t come directly and say, ‘Oh, we’re doing this,’ but you can see their hand in virtually everything.”
Claims of Opposition Intimidation
Obi alleged that the challenges he faces are not limited to him alone. According to him, other opposition figures have also experienced similar treatment.
“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all.”
The former Anambra State governor did not present evidence to support the allegations during the interview.
Airport Incident and Public Interactions
Obi also recalled what he described as an unpleasant experience at an airport. He claimed airport officials locked his vehicle while allowing other cars parked in the same area to leave without restrictions.
“I had a case recently at the airport, where people who work in the airport came and locked my car. And I said, ‘It’s me.’ The person in charge said he doesn’t care.
“But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’”
He further claimed that some acquaintances now avoid greeting him in public because they fear they could become targets.
“And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are fearing that if they greet me…”
Supporters Allegedly Fear Association
According to Obi, some supporters have also discouraged him from attending family events because of concerns about possible consequences.
“And I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come.’”
He did not provide evidence to support that claim during the interview.
What Happens Next
Obi’s remarks have added to the growing political conversation ahead of the 2027 general election. As of the time of reporting, the Federal Government had not responded to the allegations raised during the interview.
The comments are also expected to generate reactions from political stakeholders as preparations for the next election cycle gradually gather momentum.
