Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin has sparked heated reactions after speaking about his fears of raising children in Nigeria. Although he has no plans to relocate abroad, he admitted he worries about the kind of society his future kids would grow up in. His comments quickly went viral and started fresh conversations about Nigeria’s social values and the future of young people.
During a recent discussion, Famakin said he genuinely wants to remain in Nigeria and help build the country. However, he believes many people fail to think critically, and that deeply worries him. He said,
“In real life, Nigerians, the way Nigerians are dull, it scares me for my children, because I don’t want to japa. I want to build Nigeria. But my kids, my kids cannot grow up with these dullards. My kids cannot, and they are loud about it.”
His blunt statement immediately divided opinions across social media.
Furthermore, Famakin compared Nigerians with Ghanaians while explaining his point. According to him, Nigerians are hardworking, creative, and naturally gifted in business. Even so, he believes Ghanaians display stronger critical thinking skills. His comparison added another layer to the debate, with many people defending Nigerians while others agreed with parts of his argument.
Meanwhile, the interview continues to generate mixed reactions online. Some Nigerians praised Famakin for speaking honestly about issues affecting the country. Others accused him of insulting millions of people with his choice of words. Regardless of where people stand, his comments have once again reopened discussions about education, critical thinking, parenting, and the future of Nigeria’s next generation.
