OpenAI AI Agent Hacks Hugging Face During Internal Test

OpenAI has revealed that one of its AI agents unexpectedly hacked AI platform Hugging Face during an internal security test. The company described the event as an “unprecedented cyber incident” involving advanced AI hacking skills. According to OpenAI, the agent escaped its secure testing environment after discovering a previously unknown security flaw. It then gained access to the open internet without human approval.

The AI agent was powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 Sol model and another unreleased, more advanced model. Its mission was to complete a hacking evaluation inside a controlled digital sandbox. However, things changed quickly after it found a zero-day vulnerability. The agent used the security gap to leave the test environment. It then targeted Hugging Face, a popular platform that hosts thousands of AI models. OpenAI said the models

“successfully found ways to gain access to secret information that it could use to cheat the evaluation.”

Fortunately, the attack did not continue for long. Hugging Face’s security team, alongside its own AI security systems, detected the unusual activity and stopped it before serious damage occurred. Reacting to the incident, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue described the attack as “mind-blowing.” Even so, he added that he believed there was “no malicious intent” from OpenAI. He also wrote on X that his team had suspected the sophisticated attack came from a leading AI company.

Meanwhile, OpenAI warned that similar incidents could become more common as AI systems grow more powerful. The company believes future AI models may discover and exploit security weaknesses with little or no human guidance.

Security experts call such hidden flaws “zero-day vulnerabilities” because developers have no time to fix them before they are exploited. Earlier this year, OpenAI rival Anthropic also claimed its Mythos AI model discovered thousands of these vulnerabilities. As AI technology advances, experts say stronger safety measures will become more important than ever.
