United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, warning that the humanitarian crisis is worsening daily.
Speaking on Tuesday at the World Summit for Social Development in Doha, he urged Sudan’s rival factions to choose dialogue over conflict. He described the war as a “nightmare of violence” that has already destroyed countless lives.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), fighting the Sudanese army since April 2023, recently captured El-Fasher, a key city in the Darfur region, after an 18-month siege.
Sudan’s Crisis Deepens After El-Fasher Fall
Reports revealed that the RSF’s advance caused summary executions, sexual violence, looting, and attacks on aid workers. Communication lines with El-Fasher are down, leaving residents isolated and aid efforts stalled.
Guterres said the UN and partners are still delivering food and medical supplies. However, he stressed that “our teams need safe access to civilians trapped in the conflict.”
He also appealed to regional powers to use diplomacy to stop the violence and help restore peace.
UN Chief Also Warns of Renewed Gaza Strikes
Guterres turned his attention to Gaza, where the fragile ceasefire is breaking down. He expressed alarm over fresh Israeli airstrikes following reports that three recovered bodies were not those of Israeli hostages.
According to Hamas officials, more than 100 people were killed in the latest attacks, while Gaza’s civil defence agency reported 45 additional deaths from earlier strikes in October.
Guterres Urges Global Action for Peace
The UN chief said the world cannot ignore the crises in Sudan and Gaza. He warned that continued instability could spread and threaten global peace.
