There was a clash between the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer in Gaduwa District, Abuja, over the land issue. The incident occurred during an enforcement operation on disputed land. Wike accused the officer of illegal land grabbing linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff.
The officer justified the action, saying that it was all legal and that he was following orders. But Wike got incensed and asked the officer to shut up, which the officer refused to do.
The Heated Exchange
Wike called the officer a very big fool. He added that the officer was in primary school when Wike graduated. The officer stood firm, insisting on his integrity and deployment.
This confrontation in Abuja was over the ongoing land disputes. Wike has been leading an effort to stop the illegal developments since 2023, ordering demolitions in a bid to restore the city’s master plan.
Meanwhile the video of the scuffle went viral. Opinions were divided. Some lashed out at the officer for challenging a minister, others hailed his stand.
Veterans Condemn Wike
The Coalition of Military Veterans reacted swiftly. Spokesperson Abiodun Durowaiye Herberts led the charge. They said Wike disrespected a uniformed officer who represents the Nigerian state.
Call for Immediate Apology
The veterans urged Wike to apologize for what he said, explaining that Wike was demeaning the minister’s office with his utterances, adding that abusive language should not be used.
The group further faulted Wike’s action. It said he ought to have called the Chief of Naval Staff privately. Public insults harm institutions.
They also threatened not to punish the officer but that if that were the case, veterans would occupy Wike’s office and residence. Officers swear an oath of loyalty to the country and not to any individual.
