The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has demanded that the Nigerian Navy issue an immediate, unreserved apology to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. This follows his public confrontation with junior naval officer Lieutenant AM Yerima at a Wike land site in Abuja. Additionally, PANDEF emphasized that such incidents undermine civil-military respect.
Igali condemns officer’s conduct
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, PANDEF National Chairman Amb. Boladei Igali condemned social media glamorization of the incident. He described the junior officer’s actions as “grossly improper.” He added that the officer acted on orders from a retired service chief. Moreover, Igali warned that this behavior could set a dangerous precedent if left unchecked.
Igali said the retired officer should have respected Wike, who represents President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in FCT matters. “Chief Wike, without doubt, is one of the best performing ministers in this administration. Therefore, he deserves much more respect and decorum,” Igali added.
Incident seen as affront to the presidency
The former federal permanent secretary said the officer’s actions disrespected not only Wike but also the office of the President. “The powers vested in the FCT Minister were publicly ridiculed,” he said. As a result, PANDEF insists that Navy leadership apologize for the officer’s behavior. The actions fall outside the Navy’s core mandate of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Call for full investigation
Igali warned against using junior military personnel to perform illegal duties, such as monitoring private lands. Furthermore, he urged President Tinubu to direct security and law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident. They must also hold responsible parties accountable.
“This will preserve military professionalism and guarantee respect for civil authority,” Igali said. Also, he added that Wike must be fully protected. The minister continues to carry out his duties with zeal and dedication.
Conclusion
Finally, PANDEF’s statement highlights the need for civil authorities and the military to maintain mutual respect. The organization warned that ignoring such incidents could undermine governance. It could also weaken the rule of law in Nigeria.
