Vice President Kashim Shettima said the recent mass defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) show strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. He noted that the movement also reflects inclusivity and national unity.
During the event in Lokoja, Shettima formally received former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Idris Wada and other political leaders into the APC. Joining the party, he explained, was motivated by national interest rather than personal gain. The vice president emphasized that the defections strengthen Nigeria’s political stability.
“This is not a victory of one ego over another,” Shettima said. “We are witnessing alignment with a broader national vision. It is a platform of stability.”
He described the APC as a home for progressives who seek to build a renewed Nigeria. Shettima urged new members to use the party as a platform for service, particularly in Kogi State.
Defections Reflect Political Stability and Progress
Shettima praised Wada and other politicians for joining the APC. Their move, he said, exemplifies the triumph of reason over partisanship. The vice president also lauded President Tinubu for creating an inclusive party that attracts credible leaders from across the country.
Drawing a symbolic connection to Lokoja, where the Niger and Benue Rivers meet, Shettima said the defections represent a merging of convictions for national renewal. He added that this trend signals growing confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.
Governor Usman Ododo welcomed the new entrants. He described them as individuals of integrity committed to serving the people. Ododo also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Shettima for their ongoing support in Kogi State.
APC Welcomes Former PDP Leaders
National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, officially welcomed Wada, Chief Sam Ranti Abenemi, Imam Alfa, Idowu Ibekunle, and other defectors. He said the defections rescued them from the “sinking ship” of the PDP.
“You have made a wise choice in your political life,” Yilwatda said. “The APC provides a stable platform for progressive governance.”
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Wada said he was motivated by Tinubu’s achievements in infrastructure, economic reforms, and social programs. He highlighted the removal of the fuel subsidy. Initially, it caused discomfort, but prices have stabilized. The naira has also strengthened under Tinubu’s policies.
“The APC is leading Nigeria in the right direction,” Wada said. “The President’s bold decisions guide our country toward progress.”
Prominent Figures Attend Reception
Several dignitaries attended the reception. These included the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu; former Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu; Senator Smart Adeyemi; Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu; and Ali Dalori.
Shettima concluded that the defections strengthen national unity and political stability. He said they demonstrate growing confidence in President Tinubu and signal that the APC is the party for credible, progressive governance in Nigeria.
