“I’m Never Alone”: Sheikh Gumi Says Police Join All Bandit Visits

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric in Nigeria, recently addressed the controversies surrounding his interactions with bandits. He said that his visits aim at engendering peace and dialogue. In addition, Gumi explained the approach he uses in a public statement.

Defense of Visits

Gumi said that he never goes to bandit hideouts alone, as police officers and government officials always go with him; thus, this is how he ensures safety and legitimacy in his negotiations. Moreover he argued that dialogue represents the best path for resolving insecurity in the northwest region.

Achievements in Negotiation

The cleric boasted of his achievements in the dialogue with bandits, citing that he single-handedly oversaw the surrender of over 600 bandits. In addition to that, Gumi said that such efforts have actually calmed the violence in the troubled areas. He believes education and rehabilitation can turn former bandits into decent citizens.

Response to Critics

Critics have called for Gumi’s arrest, accusing him of sympathizing with terrorists. However, he dismissed these claims as misguided. Gumi insisted that his actions get official clearance and furthers national security. What’s more, he called on the government to also follow similar non-violent strategies.

Conclusion

The defense by Gumi signifies the need for dialogue in solving the issue of banditry, but with lingering controversies, successes recorded in escorted visits and surrenders indicate potential benefits, the bottom line is that all stakeholders will need to work together toward a lasting peace in Nigeria.
