The Trump administration has confirmed a dramatic tanker seizure off the coast of Venezuela, triggering renewed tensions and raising fears of further escalation. Moreover, US officials say the operation reflects a broader crackdown on sanctioned oil shipments in the region.

Trump Confirms Tanker Seizure, Hints at More Actions

During a White House event, President Donald Trump announced that US forces carried out the tanker seizure, calling the vessel “the largest one ever seized.” He declined to identify the ship’s owner but added, “I assume we’re going to keep the oil.” A video later emerged showing US soldiers rappelling onto the tanker from helicopters.

Venezuela Condemns Operation as ‘International Piracy’

Venezuela swiftly denounced the move, accusing Washington of staging “a blatant theft” and labeling the tanker seizure an attack on its sovereignty. Furthermore, the Foreign Ministry vowed to defend the nation’s natural resources and said it would file complaints at international bodies.

US Says Tanker Was Part of Sanctioned Oil Network

US Attorney General Pam Bondi explained that the seized tanker operated within an illicit network tied to Iran and Venezuela. She added that the Department of Defense, FBI and Homeland Security assisted the Coast Guard during the mission.

Seizure Deepens Military Standoff

The tanker seizure arrives as Trump increases military pressure on Venezuela, including deploying the USS Gerald Ford strike group to the southern Caribbean. In response, President Nicolás Maduro has fortified Venezuela’s coastline and warned that his forces will resist any attack.
