PDP Leaders Seek Obasanjo’s Support for 2027 Comeback

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as part of renewed efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, held on Saturday at Obasanjo’s penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was led by the party’s factional chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki (SAN). The closed-door engagement lasted about 40 minutes.

Those in attendance included the PDP Board of Trustees Chairman and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, National Secretary Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, and former governors Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Jonah Jang (Plateau), among other party leaders.

Obasanjo Urges Discipline Within PDP

Speaking after the meeting, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said Obasanjo advised the party to place discipline at the centre of its rebuilding efforts. According to him, the former president stressed that discipline remains the foundation of effective party administration.

Ememobong explained that Obasanjo urged the leadership to resist indiscipline, warning that it could undermine the party’s future. He added that the PDP leaders assured Obasanjo of their commitment to strengthening internal discipline and enforcing party rules.

PDP Targets APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Also speaking, Turaki said the visit was aimed at seeking Obasanjo’s guidance and support ahead of what he described as a challenging task of dislodging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

He described Obasanjo as an elder statesman with vast experience in institution-building and democratic governance. Turaki said the discussions inspired confidence that reclaiming power from the APC was achievable despite expected challenges.

PDP Declares Readiness for Electoral Battles

Furthermore, Turaki declared that the PDP was battle-ready for the 2027 elections. He said the party planned to demonstrate its readiness by reclaiming Ekiti and Osun states before the general polls.

Addressing party members later at the Ogun State secretariat, Turaki said the era of impunity within the PDP was over. He assured members that internal democracy would guide future elections, allowing members to freely support candidates of their choice.

Similarly, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, said party members were optimistic about the new leadership. He warned against intimidation in future elections and said the opposition was determined to mobilise voters ahead of 2027.
