Tinubu Assures US, EU Nigeria Will Establish State Police

Tinubu to Present 2026 Budget to National Assembly Friday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the United States and the European Union that Nigeria will establish state police to address the country’s security challenges.

He gave the assurance on Thursday during the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to State Police

Speaking at the meeting, Tinubu disclosed that he recently held extensive discussions with leaders from the United States and Europe on Nigeria’s security situation.

During the talks, he expressed confidence that Nigeria would pass legislation to allow state police.

“I had a very long discussion with the US and European heads,” Tinubu said.
“I told them clearly that we will pass state police to improve security.”

Furthermore, the President said he assured them that the ruling party would support the move.

“They asked if I was confident,” he added.
“I said yes. I have a party to depend on, and that party will make it happen.”

President Urges Governors, Party Leaders to Be Flexible

In addition, Tinubu called on APC governors and party leaders to show flexibility in governance.

He urged them to remain actively involved in developments across their states, especially at the grassroots level.

“You must continue to promote tolerance and flexibility,” he said.
“Also, get involved in what is happening in your states, down to the local governments.”

According to him, unity within the party remains critical to national progress.

Focus on Supreme Court Ruling on Local Governments

Meanwhile, the President addressed the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy.

He stressed that effective autonomy requires direct funding and proper implementation.

“To me, local government autonomy must be effective,” Tinubu said.
“There is no autonomy without a funded mandate.”

As a result, he assured that local governments would receive their allocations directly.

“We will give them their money directly,” he stated.
“That is full compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.”

Tinubu Emphasises Leadership and Accountability

Finally, Tinubu reminded APC leaders of their responsibility to lead with purpose.

He said the party must position itself and the country correctly.

“We are the majority. We are the leaders,” he said.
“Therefore, take leadership seriously.”
