EKSUTH Sacks Doctor After Patient Reports Kidney Removal Without Consent

The Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) has sacked a doctor after a patient reported the removal of his kidney without consent during a medical procedure.

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, confirmed the dismissal on Friday.

According to him, the hospital took immediate action after receiving the patient’s complaint and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the surgery.

Patient Raises Alarm Over Missing Kidney

The incident came to public attention after Joshua Afolayan, a kidney transplant recipient, reported that surgeons removed one of his kidneys without his knowledge.

Afolayan said he discovered the issue during follow-up medical checks after the procedure.

Following the report, EKSUTH commenced an internal review to establish the facts surrounding the operation.

Hospital authorities identified the doctor involved and terminated his appointment.

EKSUTH Launches Investigation

Dr. Filani said the state government and hospital management have opened investigations into the case.

He explained that the probe will focus on alleged breaches of medical ethics and violations of patient rights.

According to the commissioner, informed consent remains mandatory for all medical procedures.

He stressed that the government will not tolerate misconduct in any public health facility.

Concerns Over Patient Safety and Consent

The case has sparked public concern over patient safety and surgical practices in government hospitals.

Health experts have called for stricter supervision and stronger enforcement of ethical standards.

They said hospitals must strengthen internal controls to prevent similar incidents.

The Ekiti State Government assured residents that it would review safety procedures across public health institutions.

Officials also said further disciplinary or legal action could follow if investigators uncover additional violations.
