After Sokoto Bombing, Lawyer Calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s Relocation

Lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has renewed calls for his relocation from Northern Nigeria following security concerns linked to a recent bombing in Sokoto State.

The lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, made the call on Friday through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle. He reacted to reports of a United States-backed military strike targeting terrorist elements in Sokoto.

According to Ejimakor, the incident further highlights the security challenges in the region where authorities currently detain Kanu.

Ejimakor Warns of Growing Danger

Ejimakor argued that the presence of terrorist activity proves Sokoto is unsafe for detention.

He warned that continued custody in the region exposes his client to serious risk. Therefore, he urged authorities to act swiftly.

“The Sokoto bombing confirms that the area is riddled with terrorists,” Ejimakor wrote. “As a result, it was never a safe place to detain Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Consequently, he called on security agencies to move Kanu to a more secure facility outside what he described as the “terrorist belt” of northern Nigeria.

Call Becomes More Urgent

Ejimakor stressed that the situation has now become more urgent due to ongoing security developments.

Moreover, he said authorities must prioritise safety while respecting legal standards and due process.

Background on Kanu’s Detention

Nnamdi Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021.

Since then, his legal team has repeatedly raised concerns about his safety, health, and detention conditions.

However, the DSS has yet to respond to the latest demand for his relocation.
